White-collar crime has to be proven

January 3, 2009

We at Nickels see many different types of , but one we tend to see a lot is that of white-collar crimes. These type of crimes are non violent in nature, and usually committed by a government official or a business executive type. This type of person does not commit a crime using guns but they take place using a type of deception. The evidence that needs to be collected for this type of crime is all paper based.

The following are the types of white-collar crimes that can take place:

1. Bribery – It happens when someone demands or takes some kind of bribe
2. Larceny – In this type of crime someone takes a property without paying for it.
3. Embezzlement involves the taking of money, personal property or property without the owners consent. The person has usually been entrusted with this property.
4. Fraud – This occurs when a person uses deception to get classified information or when deception is used to steal something.
5. Perjury – The act of lying under oath in a court proceeding
6. Extortion – this is just another word for blackmail
7. Obstruction of Justice – This is where a person interferes with an official criminal investigation.

The above are the basic types of white-collar crimes that exist. Of course, part of our job is coming up with the proof that such crimes were committed.

White-collar crimes can be prosecuted at both a state and federal level and if convicted the suspect is charged with very large fines and in many cases some jail time.

When a person is accused of some kind of , he needs to hire an attorney and just as the accuser, needs to prove his innocence. Most corporations that believe there has been a white-collar crime committed will hire the Tom Nickels private investigation firm to find prove of the crime.
