Private Investigator Gear, Neat Spy Gadgets or Trouble?

July 9, 2010

Many people think being a private investigator must be cool. After all, you get to use awesome spy stuff, like tiny microphones and video surveillance devices hidden in clocks. These private investigation or “spy” tools are easily found online at places like the PI Mall, PI Gear or Global PI Supply.

So what’s the problem? I can think of several.

As a licensed Massachusetts or New Hampshire private investigator, you have some abilities within the confines of the law that you don’t have as a private citizen. As well, you can own some products as a private investigator you can’t own as a citizen. Many unlicensed individuals visit the online stores, buy up the cool gadgets and go about trying to use them. Unfortunately, they may end up getting the tools confiscated or themselves jailed.

There’s a fine line between private investigation and stalking. If you’re trying to do your own investigation without a license, make sure you know the laws for private citizens. If you’re trying to build a court case, for instance, you have to follow certain guidelines. Some forms of information gathering, such as video surveillance, can be illegal without a license depending on which state you live in.

Another problem is having these tools in the hands of people without the best intentions. One of the necessities for getting a private investigator’s license in Massachusetts, for example, is being a person of integrity. The state does their best to ensure you’re an upright person before giving you a license, because of the things a PI is allowed vs. a private citizen.

For instance, one of the products offered by the PI Mall is a camera finder. The camera finder scans for hidden cameras. While this is great for private investigators, consider privacy issues. These hidden camera finders scan for surveillance; if the cameras are wireless, the finder can then hook into the wireless feed and show you what the camera sees.

Now, I haven’t personally used this camera finder. I don’t know how well it works. I’m neither promoting PI Mall and the camera finder nor talking down about them. However, if you buy tools online (or even offline), make sure they’re legal in your state/city. Also, if you decide to use these tools and aren’t a licensed private investigator, check carefully to find out what can be used as evidence and what can get you thrown in jail.

Lastly, remember these tools are open and available to pretty much anyone. From badges to professional clothing and equipment, it’s easy for anyone to look like a private investigator or local police official. Don’t just take things for granted if someone tells you they’re with this or that bureau. Before opening a door, call the bureau they’re supposed to be with and verify their identity. Investigate the truth!
